Network Player Preamplifier

Available to pre-order now to receive at the beginning of August

The MOON 491 is a premium audio component integrating a network music player, preamplifier, DAC, phono stage, and headphone amplifier within a single chassis. Unifying these functions in a single component simplifies and improves the user experience but also reduces signal path complexity while maintaining signal integrity. The 491 is engineered to operate in combination with the MOON 461 power amplifier, ensuring optimal performance across the range. Derived from the design principles of MOON’s flagship North Collection, it incorporates advanced network connectivity, extensive source compatibility, and tightly integrated functional control.

Standard finish:

  • Two Tone

  • Full Black

At the core of the 491 is MOON’s proprietary MiND 2 streaming technology. It can operate as a UPnP renderer, a Roon Ready endpoint, and is compatible with AirPlay and Bluetooth. The MOON MiND Controller app for iOS and Android provides access to major music services, including Qobuz, TIDAL, Deezer, and Spotify. Playback and system functions can be controlled through the app, the front-panel buttons, and the aluminium CRM-4 remote control. The 491 also supports Qobuz Connect, TIDAL Connect, and Spotify Connect.

The 491 features MOON Hybrid Power (MHP), proprietary technology that delivers ultra-stable, low-noise DC power to sensitive circuits. It blends traditional linear and modern switch-mode technologies for superior efficiency and lower sensitivity to fluctuations in the mains voltage. It operates at switching frequencies far beyond the audio band, where it does not contaminate highly sensitive audio circuits such as the phono stage. The result is a lower noise floor with more dynamic swings.

The DAC section employs two ESS 9039Q2M converters configured in dual-mono mode, combined with a precision clock and refined output stage for accurate digital-to-analogue conversion. This design maximises channel separation while reducing noise and distortion, contributing to a wider dynamic range and a more natural, lifelike presentation with improved spatial accuracy and micro-detail retrieval. To support possible future upgrades and ensure long-term compatibility, this section is mounted on a modular daughter board.

A defining aspect of the 491 is its integrated phono stage, which supports both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges through menu-configurable MM/MC settings, enabling the phono stage to be optimised for cartridge type, loading requirements, and playback preferences. The phono section provides selectable input impedance of 47 kΩ, 1 kΩ, 470 Ω, 100 Ω, or 10 Ω; selectable input capacitance of 0 pF, 100 pF, or 470 pF; and selectable additional gain of 40 dB, 54 dB, 60 dB, or 66 dB. It also offers selectable RIAA or IEC equalisation curves, allowing the phono stage to be optimised for cartridge type, loading requirements, and playback preferences. This degree of configurability allows the phono input to function as a properly adaptable analogue interface rather than as a fixed auxiliary stage, improving cartridge matching and low-level signal handling.

The 491 features two line-level inputs—one RCA and one balanced XLR—and one phono input. Output is via variable and fixed RCA connections, and a variable balanced XLR connection, as well as a ¼” headphone jack. The large display indicates volume, album art, and other information in brilliant colour.

With its classic MOON form, black case, and bead-blasted black or silver aluminium cheeks, the 491 represents a clear step up from the multi-award-winning MOON 371 network player/amplifier, offering enhanced sound quality, greater configurability, and expanded functionality. It pairs seamlessly with the MOON 461 to form the most capable system within the Compass Collection, while also integrating easily with a wide range of compatible amplifiers. Furthermore, the 491 is fully compatible with the optional premium BRM-1 Bluetooth remote control, featuring a luxury volume knob and display for enjoyable operation.
